Malcolm Turnbull has said “Australian values” are what define and unite Australians – but is looking for input on just what, exactly, they are.
The prime minister announced sweeping changes to Australian citizenship requirements on Thursday morning that would place greater weight on “common values”, which would be put to the public for consultation.

The deputy prime minister, Barnaby Joyce, gave his perspective while wearing a shirt, tie, blazer and an Akubra cattleman hat, which some suggested was representative of Australian values in action.

A man who reportedly passed the test on his 48th attempt was in fact exemplary Australian citizen material, one Twitter user suggested.
“Nothing represents #AustralianValues more than the person who took 48 goes to pass the citizenship test: persistence & not wanting to study.”
The federal government would open up the values requirement for public consultation between now and 1 June, said the immigration minister, Peter Dutton.
The resounding response to the news did suggest one revision was a given:
