From a tearoom to burgers - the best in Notts scoop prizes at the Food Awards England

From world flavours and veggie food to tea and cake in vintage surroundings and whopping American burgers - restaurants and cafes in Notts are celebrating today after scooping honours at the Food Awards England.

The sixth annual awards, held at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, paid tribute to hard-working establishments serving delicious dishes and giving customers a unique experience.

Annie's Burger Shack, in the Lace Market, scooped the overall prize for Burger Bar of the Year, wowing judges with the meat, vegetarian and vegan burgers smothered with toppings such as the Buffalo Ranch - with southern fried chicken, with a drizzle of New York buffalo wing sauce, ranch dressing, pickled red onion, and blue cheese dressing.

Owner Anmarie Spaziano, who is celebrating ten years of burger making in Nottingham this year, said she was "pretty shellshocked" by the award.

Middle Eastern meze, tangine, shawarma and kebabs secured Ana Bedouin, in Haydn Road, Sherwood, the prize for Best World Cuisine in the Midlands.

The prize for Best Vegetarian Establishment in the Midlands went to No.12 Hounds Gate. The tiny cafe closed at the weekend as plans take shape to move to bigger premises at Eldon Chambers, where the business will become No. Twelve.

Lady Jayne's Tearoom, a small vintage tea room in Stapleford near the tram terminus, was crowned the East Midlands' Cafe of the Year.

Owner Karen Townsend was shocked to learn the news. She said: "With everything being so busy at the tearoom we didn't even go."

More than 200 guests attended the presentation. A spokesperson said: "The awards celebrated everything related to food and provided a platform to thank those who have dedicated their whole career in providing us with great gastronomic delights. They also showcased amazing professionals that take our taste buds around the world by serving from Mexican and Italian to Oriental and the best of the East.

“We would like to congratulate all winners and finalists for their amazing achievements.”
