"Rosemary's Baby" terrifies. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, the Roman Polanski-Mia Farrow collaboration spawned several copycats as well as a 1974 sequel (with Patty Duke) and a 2008 NBC miniseries remake (with Zoe Saldana).
JULY 15
"One Life to Live" debuts. This ABC daytime drama came from soap queen Agnes Nixon. It lasted more than four decades and set itself apart with storylines around social issues and diverse characters. Its success led to "All My Children" and "General Hospital."
SEPT. 17
"Julia" on NBC. When Diahann Carroll starred as a nurse and widowed single mother who lost her Army captain husband in Vietnam, it was the first time American audiences saw a black woman playing a professional who didn't fit the African American stereotypes so often seen on television.
SEPT. 18
"Funny Girl" brings Barbra to the big screen. After finding success in music and on Broadway, Hollywood was the next step for Streisand, who chose to reprise her Tony-nominated role as Fanny Brice. The following year, she won Oscar gold.
NOV. 22
The Beatles' White Album. Officially titled "The Beatles," the ninth album from the Liverpool boys who had left their Fab Four days behind received mixed reviews even as it reflected the year's chaos. "You are either hip to it or you ain't," wrote Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner in '68. The song "Helter Skelter" would go on to be associated with the Manson murders. And within two years the group would break up.

Rolling Stones' "Beggars Banquet." The group's last album released during Brian Jones' lifetime includes the rock classic "Sympathy for the Devil."
