Frog from Ecuador found 5,700 miles away in a UK branch of Tesco

Tesco shop staff were left stunned when they found a stowaway frog in a box of bananas – after it travelled more than 5,000 miles from Ecuador.

The little amphibian was spotted hopping around a consignment of fruit at the branch in Northampton.

Incredibly, it had survived the 5,700 mile journey from South America where the fruit was picked.

Shop workers discovered the exotic creature in a container of bananas peering from the shelves at the store based in Clannell Road, on the outskirts of the town.

After safely confining the male frog, they contacted the RSPCA who attended the scene to hand it over to the care of specialist keepers.

The frog - nicknamed Juan by the RSPCA - is yet to be formally identified, but he is thought to be a type of tree frog of which there are over 900 different species.

Animal collection officer Greg Hagen, who attended the scene, said: “In my role I never quite know what I’m going to get called out to, or indeed where.

"But when ‘frog in Tesco’ appeared on my list of jobs, it was a bit of a surprise.

“It must have been quite an ordeal for Juan, traveling all that way in a box of bananas and turning up in Northampton.

"But he had been really carefully looked after by the staff until I could get there which was really kind of them, and thankfully, he was in good condition and able to be moved to a specialist where he’ll be well kept.”
