Frockwatch: the verdict

Heidi Klum
The hits

Clearly Heidi Klum is supposed to look good in pretty frocks, it being her job and all. But she did look exceptionally lovely tonight. And if you like the dress, it's being auctioned off for charity shortly

Katherine Heigl
Katherine Heigl shows how to do old-school Hollywood glamour with a twist - a one-shouldered Escada frock being about as much of a twist as this year's dresses exhibited Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/AP
Jennifer Garner
If you're going to wear black, at least wear it like Jennifer Garner - beautifully fitted Oscar de la Renta dress, great hair, and a bit of serious bling - in this case, 61 carats of diamonds from Van Cleef & Arpels Photograph: Ian West/AP
Calista Flockhart
Calista Flockhart went for a vintage vaguely Grecian goddess gown and came up trumps - simple but flattering on her teeny-tiny frame and a nice splash of cool colour amongst the hot red and dull black Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/AP
Cotillard
The huhs?

Marion Cotillard in Jean-Paul Gaultier, who was clearly taking the fish-tail dress a little too literally. The shape is lovely but the scales are just a bit scary. She should not attempt to wear this dress in the vicinity of chips

Faye Dunaway
Faye Dunaway and Tilda Swinton. Tilda is famed for her avant-garde approach to red carpet dressing. This one-shoulder Lanvin black number is actually rather understated by her usual standards. Faye, meanwhile, looks rather like she attempted to re-enact the Goldfinger death scene only with bacofoil instead of gold paint Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/AP
Nicole Kidman
The misses

Nicole Kidman in another black number - dull dull dull. Wearing a lot of diamonds around her neck do not rescue it from frock tedium, even if it is by Balenciaga. Even if there are 7,645 diamonds. Of course, it is still immeasurably better than her recent Tin Man impression

Cameron Diaz
I can't help feeling that with the pick of fashion's top designers at her fingertips, Cameron Diaz might have found a frock that actually fit. Ok, it's not as bad as Gwyneth Paltrow's infamous goth-fancy-dress number, but it's looking mighty uncomfortable. And mighty similar to what she wore last year, come to think of it. Make an effort please, Cameron Photograph: Frazer Harrison/Getty
Oscar red carpet live
Anne Hathaway in Marchesa. I am probably alone in thinking this dress really horrible - she'll surely get rave reviews for it. But I can't shake the feeling that the dress is, quite literally, growing on her - creeping up her shoulder, soon to engulf her head Anne, of course, is a fan of oversized ornamentation - see last year's frock Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/AP
Diablo Cody
