'Frightening' Man Utd star Daniel James shows Leeds United what they could have won as he wows again

Daniel James started his second game for Manchester United against opponents he knows all too well.

The Old Trafford club faced Leeds United out in Australia on Wednesday as both teams continued their pre-season preparations Down Under.

James was electric on his debut against Perth Glory, earning himself the man-of-the-match award and plenty of plaudits along the way.

And against the Whites you could forgive him for having that little bit extra motivation.

James really showed his former suitors what they could have won at the Optus Stadium.

United took the lead through Mason Greenwood, and there was a clear gulf between the sides early on.  James was involved, hitting the post just before the break after an incredible turn of pace, but there were perhaps indications that he is not quite the finished article just yet.

Richard Fay, our sister title the MEN's United reporter , had this to say about James' first-half performance: "We’ve seen both sides of Daniel James already this evening.

"He is frightening on the break but still needs to work on his play in the final third. Solskjaer said this week that the Wales international is a raw talent, but that he can become a ‘top player’. It’s been a lively start, but a reminder that he can’t be put under too much pressure next season."

James was replaced at half-time as Solskjaer changed his entire first XI. You can follow the game here .

Leeds fans will be keen to put James out of their thoughts after he dominated their transfer conversations for large parts last season.

Marcelo Bielsa's pursuit of the Welshman was long-winded, controversial and ultimately unsuccessful.

The courting began before Christmas 2018, with speculative talk of £20million interest from the Elland Road side.

That was rubbished at the time but come January that speculation intensified, with Bielsa's interest in James there for all to see as a folder dedicated to the Swansea City player was clearly visible on the Argentine's desktop computer while he was conducting a presentation to the press amid the "spygate" scandal.

If that was controversial, it was nothing compared to the drama that unfolded on deadline day, when the initial loan deal to take James to Elland Road was pulled at the last minute by then chairman Huw Jenkins.

The Welshman's proposed switch to Elland Road would have initially been a temporary one, with that move due to be made permanent this summer if Bielsa's side gained promotion to the Premier League. But with Leeds suffering defeat to Derby County in the play-off semi-finals, the move would not have gone through anyway.

The rest is history - and by the looks of things, James could write his own name into Manchester United's if he continues in the same vein.
