Frightening footage shows 'scary' flooding as raging river breaks its banks in Clifden, Co Galway

Frightening footage shows 'scary' floods in Galway as heavy rain overnight causes a river to burst its banks.

The video, taken this morning in Clifden and posted on Twitter, shows the Owenglin River rushing through a bridge at the south side of the town while the nearby Connemara Pony show field was completely underwater.

Emergency services have closed off multiple roads in the area as Met Eireann forecast further flooding in the north-west of Ireland today.

A status yellow warning is in place in Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal until 9pm with heavy flooding already seen across the region.

One woman who witnessed the devastating floods in Clifden this morning, Jean Wallace, said: "Drove into Clifden for some supplies. They've since closed all the roads.

"One elderly local said he has never seen anything like the flooding today."

Members of Galway Fire Service and Gardai are helping people stuck in the floods.

A spokesperson for Met Eireann said: "Dull this morning with spells of rain, giving heavy falls in places and a risk of localised flooding.

"It will become drier over much of Leinster and Munster this afternoon. Rain will continue in Connacht and Ulster and will spread southeastwards this evening.

"Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees with moderate southerly winds."
