A shocking new video shows how quickly a small quantity hand sanitiser can silently burn through carpet and destroy a home or business.
Premises all over the country have installed hand sanitiser dispensers as part of measures aimed at containing coronavirus.
But Dublin Fire Brigade has issued a stark warning that the cleaning product can easily destroy a building if it is set alight.
Firefighters set up an experiment Merchant's Quay 61st scouts to demonstrate how a small spillage of hand sanitiser can burn invisibly and unnoticed through a carpet.
Thermal imaging footage of the experiment shows the fire raging and burning through the carpet within seconds.
DFB shared the video on social media and offered a number of tips to prevent hand sanitiser spillage.
They said: "Dispensers should have an integrated drip tray, or tray underneath to catch spillages.
"Any spillages should be cleaned up immediately.
"Never install a dispenser above carpet
"Hand sanitiser has a flash point as low as 23 degrees Celcius."
