Frightened mum and son can't sleep after 'hammer attack' on home

A vulnerable single parent said her son wakes up saying "don't let them get me", after her home was targeted in a hammer attack.

Sarah-Ann Coleman and her 12-year-old son are unable to sleep at the Billingham property after the terrifying early-morning incident.

The health care assistant at the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, found the glass windowpane and front door smashed when she woke on Saturday morning, Teesside Live reports.

The Cranswick Close home's kitchen window was also damaged during the incident at around 12.40am.

The homeowner said: "I work at North Tees Hospital and had done four 12-hour shifts.

"After finishing at 8.15pm I picked my son up who stays with my mam, came home and gone to bed.

"I got up during the night to get a drink and was sat on the edge of the bed and heard a noise.

"I thought it was something falling in the bathroom.

"I checked the bathroom and my son's bedroom but then I'd seen the glass smashed on the front door."

The mum-of-one said she had a camera in the kitchen window which showed somebody "holding a hammer".

Sarah-Ann added that her son now "won't sleep in his bedroom" and is having nightmares following the incident.

"He keeps waking up up saying 'don't let them get me'," she added.

The 45-year-old also said that she has also "not been able to sleep on a night".

She said: "All I've been doing is sitting on the stairs waiting for them to come back".

The Billingham woman told how she has not had any previous incidents after living in the cul-de-sac property for 21 years.

Unfortunately, Sarah-Ann did not have any house insurance but a local business has offered to fix her door and window free of charge.

Cleveland Police confirmed it has received a report of criminal damage and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information regarding the incident or anyone with private CCTV which may show the person responsible is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 quoting CE21109210," a spokesperson said.
