Friends The Reunion: Co-creator explains why more episodes will 'never be an option'

Friends The Reunion co-creator Kevin Bright has revealed why the iconic sitcom was never considered for a reboot.

Although it’s one of the world's most-loved shows, the TV guru has admitted that creating new episodes following the finale in 2004 was simply ‘never an option’.

As Friends fans gear up to watch the cast – Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Matt Le Blanc, and Lisa Kudrow - reunite for the first time in 17 years, co-creator Bright has lifted the lid on why the long-awaited reunion took so long.

Speaking about why the show’s writers and creators chose a reunion show over a reboot, Mr Bright said more episodes were simply out of the question.

“We were never leaning in that direction because as we like to say, in order to do anything new or further we would have to undo a lot of where the show ended,” he explained.

“Because remember this is now 25 years later. You just don't pick up where you left of and there is a kind of sadness to that.

“Because that's not what the show is about, it's not about a mid-life crisis, it's about another time in your life, so we were like, "let's pass on that."

Mr Bright went on to admit that the long-awaited reunion show is 'half a documentary, half a variety show'.

He then shared an explanation as to why it had taken them so long to actually get down to business.

Friends bosses made a point of waiting for the coronavirus pandemic to ease in order for them to bring in a live audience – to make it feel like old times.

Each main star is reportedly being paid between £1.7million and £2.1million for the hour-long reunion special, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with the show set to air in the UK Thursday (May 27) on Sky One.

In a recent interview with on GMA, the much-loved stars opened up about how emotional it was for them to walk back onto set after all these years.

“I don't think they - the - any of us had any idea how emotional we would be when we walked onto the set,” Courteney admitted.

“To see it exactly the way it was, the - literally besides the cookie jar that Lisa took home and the neon coffee thing that Jen took. Besides that, it was exactly the same. And it was so emotional that we just started crying.”
