Friends start website showing nearest free meals for children

A website has launched allowing people to find their nearest business providing free meals for children.

Jack Horwood had the idea for Help Out When School's Out after the Government ruled out extending meal vouchers for vulnerable children in England to the holidays.

Mr Horwood, a press officer for trade union Unison South West, and friends in the tech industry worked through Friday night so the website could go live on Saturday (October 24).

People can enter their postcode on the site and it will show them the nearest business offering free meals for children in half-term.

Some 417 businesses across the country have registered with Help Out When School's Out, a figure Mr Horwood hopes will rise in coming days.

Help Out When School's Out's website says: "On Wednesday, October 21, the Government voted against Labour’s motion to provide free school meals in school holidays.

"Incredibly, businesses across the country started offering free meals for children throughout October half-term.

"This website aims to share that goodwill and kindness and contribute, in a small way, to the campaign spearheaded by Marcus Rashford MBE.

"Over 400 businesses are listed on the site, with more being added daily."

Manchester Utd footballer Marcus Rashford's petition to expand free school meal access has more than 760,000 names.

Since the Government voted down the campaign, cafes, restaurants and some local authorities – including Bristol City Council – have pledged to help feed children facing holiday hunger during the October half term.

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees says the city will be "stepping up" to "make sure our children are fed".

Mr Horwood described Help Out When School's Out as a team effort. He worked with Matt Sadler, Chris Thompson, Matt Tullett, James Rodie, Jeegar Kakkad and Josh Searl to put it together.
