The Newmarket community is rallying behind the family of Kerry Rooney, who died after being stabbed outside his home on Wednesday night.

Mr Rooney's former partner Bonita Vivien Coue has been charged with murder, two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and going armed to cause fear.

Ms Coue represented herself during a brief appearance in Brisbane Arrest Court on Thursday morning, where the case was adjourned until July 12.

Mr Rooney is being remembered as a dedicated father, who "lived for" his 10-year-old son.

The 51-year-old managed an Under 11s team at the Newmarket Soccer Football Club.

Club president Paul Tatters said members loved Mr Rooney, who was supportive of the players and teams.

"He was at every training, every game," Mr Tatters said.

"We were devastated, not only personally because I know Kerry, but for the team that he manages and also for [his son]," Mr Tatters said.

"We're in the process of organising a tribute [event] and a fundraiser for [his son] to support him into the future."

'He's been a great friend'

Family friend Kym Mansfield said Mr Rooney was a dedicated father who, despite being a single dad, gave his son all the love and opportunities he could.

Ms Mansfield said her daughter had been good friends with Mr Rooney's son since they were in kindergarten.

"He had a really big heart and he's been a great friend," Ms Mansfield said.

"His son was his whole life.

"He gave everything to keep [his son] safe and give him a good life," Ms Mansfield said.

She spoke of Mr Rooney's resilience as a single parent.

"Life just kept throwing lemons at him and he just kept bouncing back and smiling," she said.
