Friends of tragic young engineer Ben Burgess, 25, gather to pay tribute

Friends of a popular Merchant Navy engineer who died while away in Barbados have gathered to pay tribute to him.

Ben Burgess, 25, was found dead in the water in the Caribbean town of Oistins last Wednesday.

An investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances of Ben's death, who went missing while on a period of shore leave.

Originally from Yorkshire, he moved to Prudhoe to live with partner Rebecca Pattinson.

The pair were engaged at the time of his death.

Dozens gathered at Highfield Park in the town which came to be Ben's home for a 'fun day' to help raise money to install safety equipment at the spot he lost his life.

Heartbroken fiancée Rebecca, 26, said: "We're here to raise some money for my partner who sadly lost his life out in Barbados.

"It was a tragic accident so we want to raise money for life jackets and railings on the jetty."

Friend Daniel Gowens, 27, said: "I was asked to help run a charity event to raise money to make sure this sort of tragic event doesn't happen again.

"We put together a lovely theme around Ben's favourite colour blue.

"We wanted to put together something everyone could take part in so we went for a rounders day.

"We've got a pirate theme as well because he worked on a boat and he was knowing as 'pirate Ben' to us."

He added: "We've had about 100 people here playing rounders and just having a good laugh and a good drink because that's what Ben would have wanted."

So far, more than £1,7000 has been raised through online donations.
