Friends of tragic Navan teen Mikey Leddy campaign for minute of silence at Manchester United match

Friends of a tragic young teenager who passed away in Lanzarote have launched a campaign to have him remembered at a major sporting event.

Mikey Leddy, 15, from Navan in Meath, died after falling from a height while on holidays on the Spanish island.

The young lad suffered a serious head injury after he fell from a wall at the resort of Puerto del Carmen in the early hours of Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene and Mikey was rushed to hospital but he passed away on Tuesday surrounded by his family.

Mikey was well-known as a talented sportsman in his local area and played both GAA and soccer.

Now his friends and family are have launched their #minute4mikey campaign, appealing to Manchester United to hold a minute's silence or applaud for the youngster at one of their games.

Mikey's pals are sharing an image of a jersey with his name on it and the hashtag #minute4mikey on social media and are asking others to share and tag Manchester United.

The club host Chelsea on Sunday in their opening Premier League tie of the season at Old Trafford.

His club Johnstown FC shared a touching tribute to Mikey after the sad news of his death broke.

They said: "It is with great sadness our own Mikey Leddy has passed away this afternoon, the tragic event that has happened in the last 48 hours has shocked us all.

"We would ask that everyone remembers Mikey for the champion he was and his fighting spirit. He will be with us in our minds and spirit forever."

One of Mikey's coaches added: "It's been an honour to coach Mikey for the last four years,he was a character, always gave 200 percent for his team mates, a lovely kid and a true champion for Johnstown.

"My thoughts and prayers are with his family, may you rest in peace Mikey Leddy you will be missed but not forgotten."

Another person added: "Rip Mikey, my deepest condolences to all his family friends and teammates who are at a sad loss today.

"It was a pleasure to referee Mikey one of the most respectful chaps I ever came across."
