Friends of terminally ill East Kilbride runner help her reach 100 outings

The family and friends of a terminally ill woman helped her get to 100 runs at the weekend.

Keen runner Michele Osborne had notched-up 87 Park Runs in her running career and was determined to get to 100.

But having beaten breast cancer, Michele was struck down with secondary lung cancer and has been fighting the illness all year.

That saw her run despite her illness, showing great courage, strength, determination and inspiration to take on 5ks as she refused to let the illness get the better of her.

Michele took on her last run with husband Jeremy and friend on November 9 – but finally, the grips of her illness gotten the better of her and she is now bed-bound.

So, at the weekend, friends, family and running buddies from Strathaven Striders headed to Strathclyde Country Park to take part in a 13-run relay.

That saw members use Michele’s individually chipped GPS watch to complete a 5k each, before handing it over to the next person.

Park Run director and family friend, Jim Hendrie, told the News about the special event.

He said: “Saturday went really well.

“We were there from 8am in the freezing cold and about 20 of us turned out in Michele’s name.

“Michele is now in the 100 club and has the T-shirt to prove it, which she is over the moon with.”

Thirteen runners, including Michele and Jeremy’s children, friends, and family, each took a turn to get her up to the highly sought after 100 mark.

And things were finished off by Jeremy, who took on the last leg in honour of his beloved wife.

Jim added: “Michele was always taking part, always helping out.

“It was great to see Jeremy take on the final run, dressed in a pink tutu and all. He had a support team the whole way with everyone running alongside him.

“It was a great occasion and really emotional. We’re all just delighted we could do something for Michele.”

A member of the Strathaven Striders, Michele was voted as the Strider of the Year by her teammates.

Jim said the fact Michele had been running throughout the year in face of her illness was “brilliant”.
