Friends of Stonehouse Park teamed up to clean-up Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park

Boxer shorts, socks and towels were amongst the unusual items collected by volunteers during a litter-pick up at Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park on Sunday.

Friends of Stonehouse Park organised the event as part of the Upstream Battle Week of Action campaign. In total, 21 volunteers took part.

Karen Kelly from Friends of Stonehouse Park said: “I think we picked up about eight bags of litter, and a couple of old tyres!

“This is greatly reduced from the first few times we picked litter, which is great news – people seem to be taking care of the park.

“The only issue is what we think is a dog walker that regularly uses the park and drops cans of beer at the top of the woodland, but this is our only real problem area.”

John Young, who helped to organise the event, said: “The village has been fantastic in supporting the many events and clean-ups we have initiated to encourage better use of the park and enable people to explore the environment around them.

“Many unusual things have been found, including discarded underwear, parts of cars, hidden carry-outs and the occasional rubber duck!”

If anybody wants to get involved with Friends of Stonehouse Park they can contact them via their Facebook page, or attend one of their meetings in the Backroad Inn in Queen Street on the last Sunday of every month.
