Friends of Cambuslang doctor Cat Gaskell to finish fundraiser she started before death

Friends of a much-loved Glasgow GP who died last month have told Glasgow Live they plan to finish a fundraiser she started in her memory.

Cambuslang doctor Cat Gaskell was reported missing on August 14 after friends and family launched a desperate media appeal to find her.

Her body was found in a wooded area in Newton shortly after.

Prior to her death, Cat had been planning to run the London marathon in October for Macmillan Cancer Charity.

Now her teammates from 5-a-side are planning to continue her fundraising efforts in her memory, and are holding a 'footiethon' this weekend where they will play a four-hour game at GOALS in Shawlands, roughly the same time as a marathon would take.

Lesley Campbell, one of Cat's teammates, told Glasgow Live : "We initially wanted to donate to her page to the charity she had chosen, because we knew her. Cat played with us all for a year or so but had hurt her ankle before the sad news that she had gone missing.

"Her fundraiser was sitting at £1000 before she lost her life. We decided to do something football-related. Cat loved marathons so we decided to combine that with football and make it a tournament-style game.

"We don't know why she chose that particular charity, but some of her patients said she wore Macmillan laces when she ran, so it was a cause close to her heart.

"I knew her through football. We would play, and especially during lockdown where there wasn't much else to do. She was a good footballer, would sprint everywhere."

Lesley believes that Cat would have been "overwhelmed" if she saw the continued fundraising efforts by her teammates.

"You don't know anyone's life apart from the football really - you get there and have a bit of a chat beforehand" she said.

"I think we all felt a bit of regret for that. We have since said that we are there if anyone ever needs to have a chat, have tried to be a bit more social. Her death has spurred us on to get to know one another a bit more."

At the time of writing, the footiethon has raised over £1700 and counting.

The footiethon will take place on September 5 from 12-14. For ever £10 you donate, you could win a Zoom Teeth Whitening package worth £359, donated by Lesley's work Enhance Dental.
