Friends of boy, 15, killed in car park fall offered counselling at school

The high school of a young boy who died after a fall from a car park has offered its students counselling.

Named by friends as Gabriel Santer, the 15-year-old was rushed to hospital after falling from a multi-storey car park, on Hanover Street, in the city centre on Saturday night.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Sunday the Calderstones School pupil had tragically died from his injuries.

In a heartbreaking letter sent to all parents and guardians of the high school today, Gabe was described as 'well-loved and charismatic'.

The letter confirms the school will be offering all students access to a trained therapist should they need any help.

The Allerton school is also speaking to its pupils, particularly those in Year 11, about the 'value of kindness and the importance of talking to each other if they need support.'

The letter says: "The course of today’s events in school has demonstrated to us all what a well-loved and charismatic young person we have lost.

"We have spent much of today supporting those Year 11 students who were close to this student and who will be most affected by this loss.

"We have met with the whole Year group, in two separate sessions, to speak to them about this.

"We also built in some time this morning for them to spend some informal time together, to speak about how they are feeling and to be supportive of one another.

"We have made key staff available throughout the course of the day and a team of trained therapists has been on site to support those students who we felt might be in greatest need of help.

"We have re-iterated to the Year 11 students the value of kindness and the importance of talking to us and to each other if they need support."

In the letter parents were encouraged by the school to hug their children 'a little longer and tighter tonight' after the devastating loss of Gabe.

The letter continued: "Should you feel it appropriate, I would encourage you to speak to your children about loss, about the importance of what we say and how we say it, and also remind them that the staff in the school, as well as the friends of this student, may well be very upset at the moment.

"Hug your children a little longer and tighter tonight."

Throughout the day mourners have visited locations across the city to honour Gabe with touching tributes.

Shrines have been created by friends and those who know him at Calderstones School and from the Pier Head, where Gabe was known to skateboard with friends.

Bouquets of flowers, handwritten notes, candles, pictures of Gabe and cuddly toys have been left at the locations.

Thousands of messages have also been posted on social media, offering condolences to his loved ones and family.

Gabe’s family are currently being supported by specially trained officers through this difficult time.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that a 15-year-old boy from Liverpool has died after falling from a car park on Hanover Street in Liverpool City Centre on Saturday, 3 October.

“Emergency services were called to a car park on Hanover Street at 8.25pm following reports that a male had fallen from the car park, but sadly despite their best efforts he was pronounced dead a short time later.

“The death is not believed to be suspicious and a file has been sent to the Coroner.

“Next of kin have been spoken to and specialist officers are supporting the family at this tragic time."
