Friends is 25 years old - but the show could have been completely different as one star nearly quit

For more than two decades six friends living in New York, spending their leisure time sat around in a coffee shop going through lifes up's, downs and round and rounds has kept millions of us across the world hooked.

There's no need to guess as of course we are talking about Friends and its iconic characters Ross, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey and Chandler.

But as the show celebrated its 25th Birthday on Sunday, September 22, it has been revealed that the show could have been VERY different and the American sitcom as we know it may have taken a different course.

Lisa Kudrow who starred as the eccentric, guitar playing and totally loveable Phoebe Buffay has recently admitted to struggling with the part and it took her co-star to give her a reality check, the Mirror reports .

Lisa as Phoebe in Friends (Channel 4)

The 56-year-old opened up in a recent episode of YouTube series Hiking With Kevin with Kevin Nealon in which she said that "playing the dumb" girl really wasn't her.

"I had played dumb girls, sure, but it wasn't really me," the actress said.

"I feel like s***, I tricked them. At the audition, I was the only one who could cope with the audition process and that's how I got it, I think. So I had to work hard at being Phoebe, you know."

But it was the king of the "How you doin'" catchphrase Matt LeBlanc that convinced her not to give up.

Things could have been very different on the American sitcom (Channel 4)

Lisa explained: "I was struggling so much and LeBlanc was like, 'What's going on with you?'

"And I said, 'I can't, I don't think I have it, I mean, I don't know what I'm doing'.

"And he went, 'You're her, relax, you got it. You've been doing this f***ing character for three years. You're working too hard. That's your problem. You don't need to work this hard. Relax.' And he was right."

This kept Lisa as Phoebe in the sitcom until the show ended in 2004 - which was another seven years later.

Could you imagine Friends any other way?
