Friends' Gunther actor James Michael Tyler battling stage four cancer at 59

James Michael Tyler, the actor known the world over for playing Gunther in Friends, has revealed he's battling prostate cancer.

The 59-year-old became a real fan favourite amongst Friends viewers for playing coffee shop worker Gunther, famous for his eye-catching shirts and crush on Rachel.

James was a surprise guest on the recent Friends reunion, appearing via video call, much to the delight of his former co-stars and fans watching at home.

What happened to the cast of BBC soap Eldorado

He revealed he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer of the prostate in an interview on hit American programme The Today Show.

He explained: "‘I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to my bones.

"I’ve been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the past three years. It’s stage 4 (now). Late stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me."

James, who is now undergoing chemotherapy went onto say that, at first, doctors were optimistic but the cancer spread after he missed an appointment during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

He continued: 'I missed going in for a test, which was not a good thing.

"The cancer decided to mutate at the time of the pandemic and so it's progressed."

Reacting to the news, one fan tweeted: "Just found out James Michael Tyler, better known as Gunther from Friends, is battling Stage 4 Prostate Cancer.

"My heart is breaking thoughts are with him and family at this really terrifying time."

Equally upset, another posted: "Oh - how awful for him - he portrayed the character of “Gunther” so well - wishing him well in his recovery," and a third commented: "Oh this makes me so sad. Prayers for him!!!"
