Two female friends from Linlithgow raised more money in a charity challenge than any other participants in the UK.
Lorna McMurray and Lesley Malone, both former teachers, together raised £2,996.25 for sight loss charity RNIB’s annual Marathon Mates appeal.
Marathon Mates encourage supporters to pair up with a friend, colleague or family member and share the traditional 26-mile marathon distance by running, walking, swimming, or anything else.
Lorna (54) began to lose her own sight in 2015, which has since grown progressively worse. She has a degenerative retinal condition in both eyes which has resulted in central vision loss.
“When my eyesight began to deteriorate, I had a lot of help from RNIB,” says Lorna, a former modern languages teacher. “They helped me to come to terms with my condition, taught me how to maximise my mobility, and advised me on what aids and equipment could help me in employment.
“Lesley and I are really delighted to know we are the top UK fundraising team for RNIB Marathon Mates this year,” Lorna says.
“We completed the 26.2 miles over four days and it was great fun covering the distance together - running in a pair definitely keeps you motivated.
“We were able to run and chat about all sorts at the same time, so we really did cover a lot of ground. The third day was probably the hardest for me and my legs were hurting, but I was not going to let the side down.
“And who knows, we may well attempt the Marathon Mates challenge again next year. We have been really touched by people’s generosity and the lovely messages of encouragement – and there’s still time to donate.”
