Friends from Bristol breaching lockdown rules involved in car crash in Devon

A pair of 'covidiots' from Bristol were fined for breaching lockdown after being involved in a car crash in Devon - more than 170 miles away.

The two men had travelled all the way to Cornwall pick up a friend over the weekend.

Tavistock Police made an example of the Bristolians on social media, imploring others not to disregard Covid-19 regulations, reports Plymouth Live.

They said on Twitter: "Over the weekend officers from Tavistock issued 10 tickets for COVID breaches, all for unnecessary travel.

"This included 2 males who were involved in a RTC who had travelled from Bristol to collect a mate from Cornwall....

"Please, essential journeys only."

In the South West, Avon and Somerset Police have been out in force targeting lockdown breaches.

A pair of adventurers were fined £200 after getting "stuck" in Cheddar Gorge over the weekend, after emergency services attended to rescue them, for their non-essential journey. Several fines have been issued at the Gorge already during this third lockdown - including someone who travelled from Bristol to "sit and eat a kebab".

The coronavirus rules state: "You must not leave your home unless you have a reasonable excuse (for example, for work or education purposes).

"If you need to travel you should stay local – meaning avoiding travelling outside of your village, town or the part of a city where you live – and look to reduce the number of journeys you make overall."
