Friends and family of missing Alex Johnson begin their search for him along the River Tyne

Family and friends have started a desperate search along the River Tyne for a young man who is believed to have fallen in the river.

Alex Johnson, from Chester-le-Street , is believed to have fallen from the Tyne Bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Tragically, the search for the 24-year-old remains ongoing and loved ones have been searching the River Tyne.

A social media appeal went viral asking for people to join the search, with. dozens of people searching from Byker through to Newburn in a bid to bring him home.

She joined the search on Saturday morning.

She said: “He was just a lovely, kindhearted, genuine person.”

Caroline said it was heartwarming to see so many people turn out to search for Alex.

“I’m just really here to try and change the situation."

Anna Tait grew up with Alex and was joined on the search by her mum, Christine Tait.

Anna, 28, said: “We grew up together and we have all known Alex all his life.
“He was just a fun loving person with a huge heart.

“It is really emotional.”

It comes after his devastated sister Ashleigh Marr, 29, appealed for help to find Alex and vowed to search the river every day until he is found .

She added: "Alex was really caring and loving.

“He wanted to help everyone else with their problems.

“Alex really liked his music. He enjoyed going out to shows, and loved being with his friends.

Northumbria Police confirmed the force received a report of a concern for welfare for a man on the Tyne Bridge at 2.15am on Tuesday.

Inquiries remain ongoing, and Northumbria Police has urged anyone with information to contact 101 quoting reference number 60 16/04/19.
