Friend pays touching tribute to 'talented' dad after sudden death

Tributes have been paid to a "funny" and "talented" dad who died suddenly.

Rob McCarthy, from Crosby, sadly died in September leaving behind his heartbroken friends and family, including his seven-year-old daughter Isabella.

The 38-year-old was described as a "great dad" who was "always smiling" by his best friend Craig Wilding.

Paying tribute to him, Craig said: "He was a really funny lad and honestly always smiling. He had a really good sense of humour.

"He was a great dad. He's got a little girl Isabella who he's left behind. She reminds me a lot of him, how she is; she's playful, funny, smiley and he was her hero.

"She's absolutely devastated to have lost her dad."

Tributes have been shared online following the news of Rob's death, as ECHO readers sent their condolences to his family.

One reader said: "So sorry to hear about this. There needs to be more done for mental health, thinking of his family."

Another said: "Life can be so, so horrid at times. Thinking of his family. Best wishes x."

A third said: "Rest in peace mate."

A fourth wrote: "Awe thoughts are with his loved ones xx RIP."

Craig said Rob was "very family orientated" and had a close relationship with his immediate family who "he loved very much."

The 38-year-old oil rig worker could "turn his hand to anything trades wise" and was described as a "talented lad."

In the years before his death, Rob had suffered with his mental health and found it hard to find the support he needed.

Craig said: "He'd been suffering with depression and anxiety for a number of years. He'd sort of hidden it really for some time and I think he just tried to deal with it himself but it probably caused him more problems in the end.

"I think it just got to the point where it came to a head where he couldn't mentally or physically cope with it anymore and asked for help. He confided in his mum and dad."

Craig said Rob and his family made many efforts to seek help but they struggled to find the appropriate support for him.

Craig has now set up a Gofundme page with the aim of raising £10,000 for the men's mental health charity Sean's Place in Rob's memory.

Sean's Place is a group dedicated to supporting and raising awareness of men's mental health. More than 100 men every week access the immediate free counselling and therapy, fun activities and life-changing support.

The service prides itself on providing this in a "non clinical, non judgemental setting."

Craig and a group of more than 20 friends will be completing a number of different challenges to raise money for the charity over the next few months, leading up to the three peaks challenge on August 6.

Craig said: "It's just something that you never really think is going to happen, it knocked me for six. I think about him a lot.

"I think the most upsetting thing is knowing that someone that close to you feels that they didn't really have anywhere to turn.

"As I say, we found this charity and I feel like it was meant to be because I think they need the funding - it's exactly what we were hoping it was."

He added: "We [want to] make people aware that are in a similar situation to Rob, that Sean's Place is the place that they can go and seek help before they hit that crisis point."
