Friend of retailer Peter Harker on mission to help NHS after Covid-19 tragedy

A friend of popular businessman Peter Harker has paid tribute to him and will raise money to help in the fight against Covid-19.

The Newcastle retailer died at his Jesmond home aged 70 on April 1 and posthumously tested positive for the coronavirus.

Lifelong friend Gordon Reed, who also believes he had the disease, has launched a fundraising effort to purchase vital testing equipment and masks for the health service.

Every day this month, the 70-year-old, who owns the Green Ginger Shopping Arcade in Tynemouth, will complete a sponsored walk the length of Jesmond Dene.

Mr Reed said: "Me and Peter were a double act, we went on holidays together, our wives were very close friends.

"He was like a brother to me, I don't know how I will ever replace that. Peter was a great storyteller and knew everything about everyone.

"It's a really big loss. I feel like my left arm has been cut off."
