Friend of Manchester synagogue attacker jailed for life over separate terror plot

  • Mohammad Bashir, 31, described as a "long-standing, committed jihadist", has been jailed for life for plotting a terror attack on a UK defence base.
  • Bashir drove Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, on a 10-hour round trip to conduct hostile reconnaissance at the UK’s Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Swindon , on 14 August last year.
  • Al-Shamie, a Syrian-born UK citizen, was later shot dead by police on 2 October after carrying out a separate attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue , where two men were killed.
  • Assistant chief constable Rob Potts stated that Bashir is a "dangerous individual with extremist views" who discussed preparing for "war" and was caught on camera discussing a terrorist attack .
  • Investigators uncovered damning internet searches for attack planning, despite the pair disposing of their mobile phones, leading to Bashir's conviction.
