Fridge freezer saved mum's life after suspected gas blast destroyed her home

A mum’s life was saved by a fridge freezer after an explosion wrecked her home.

Retired firefighter Jeff Davies, 50, found Jess Williams wedged in a gap behind the appliance.

The 31-year-old was rushed to hospital with children Reuben, five, and Elliot, four.

All are said to be critical but stable.

The suspected gas blast destroyed the terraced house in Seven Sisters, near Neath, South Wales.

Rescuer Jeff praised the “great community effort” to save the family.

He said: “Normally the wise thing is to stand back and let others come but obviously there’s always a delay.

“Jess was saved by a fridge freezer that was blown alongside her. There was a slight void to the side where she was lying.”

Neighbour Eileen Pugh, 87, said: "This is such a quiet village - you just wouldn't believe it until you saw it with your own eyes."

Leighton Williams, a builder working on a property nearby when the incident happened said he heard a loud noise and felt the ground shake.

He said: “We were all here working, and we heard it, everything shook. About ten of us ran down straight away and the whole house has gone.

"It was like something from a film."
