In this new series, Michael Portillo seeks out more neglected British locations with remarkable stories. Tonight, he visits an abandoned military hospital in Aldershot. Here, surgeons – forced to cope with the carnage that was a feature of industrialised military conflict from the Crimean war onwards – didn’t just pioneer plastic surgery on soldiers left disfigured by war; led by the pioneering surgeon Harold Gillies, they also performed the first gender reassignment surgery some 70 years ago.
