Make Me An Egghead
6.30pm, BBC2

Pub quiz champs: think you’ve got what it takes to join the UK’s most formidable quiz team? In this great Egghead race, Jeremy Vine hosts a nationwide search to locate one male and one female contestant, taking on multiple-choice questions (with help, à la X Factor, from Egghead mentors) to secure a seat among the gods. Let’s hope they’re up to speed with sport and geography in particular – two subjects that often scupper the keenest trivia hounds. Ali Catterall

Countrywise: Guide to Britain
8pm, ITV

Liz Bonnin and Ben Fogle’s gentle amble around the country continues with wildlife and scenery to inspire people to get outdoors. Travelling toff Fogle goes wild swimming in Snowdonia, politely agreeing to strip off completely. Bonnin, meanwhile, joins a group of kids spotting red deer on a nocturnal safari in Galloway. And, on a farm in Yorkshire, a shepherd juggles bringing home her ninth baby with a busy life looking after children and animals. Hannah Verdier

The Cars That Made Britain Great
8pm, Channel 5

Rufus Hound’s latest trip to four-wheeled fantasia covers (and covets) the sexiest cars ever to rumble off British production lines. Tonight’s automotive erotica includes Jaguar’s E-Type, the Lotus Europa and Dagenham’s very own urban aphrodisiac, the Ford Capri. A collection of cars championed by superstars from George Best and Barry Gibb to James Bond and, erm, Austin Powers are on show, but which combination of horsepower and pulling power will prevail? Mark Gibbings-Jones

Eat Well For Less?
9pm, BBC1

Railing against Mary Berry’s disgust of deep-fat fryers, Gregg Wallace has lately been extolling the virtues of grease. Perhaps, then, the MasterChef compere will suggest tonight that the King family cut down their food bill by lobbing everything into a vat of smoking lard. The Wandsworth brood are fans of pricey organic produce; can Gregg and veg-box mogul Chris Bavin convince them of the merits of the humble Spam fritter? Hannah J Davies

Joanna Lumley’s Japan
9pm, ITV

This week, Joanna fetches up in the “matrix of discombobulation” that is Tokyo. Don’t expect hard-hitting reportage; Lumley finds everything she sees to be “fabulous”. No matter: she’s a good guide (from an occidental perspective) to Japan’s strangeness, adept at joshing those she meets into discussing their lives. Expect tales of “a sushi clock”, the world of the geisha and, in Kyoto, people “taking pictures of people taking pictures” during cherry blossom season. Jonathan Wright

Hooten & the Lady
9pm, Sky1

Hooten (Michael Landes) is a wise-cracking “maverick adventurer” and “foolhardy treasure hunter”, while the lady (Ophelia Lovibond) is Lady Alexandra Lindo-Parker, curator of the British Museum and a fan of the hands-on approach to antiquities, like her heroes Howard Carter and Percy Fawcett. Indiana Jones vibes and derring-do are the order of the day. With shooting locations including Russia, South Africa and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, this new drama must have cost Sky a bloody fortune. Ben Arnold

American Horror Story
10pm, Fox

Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s horny horror anthology series returns. While last season’s flashback-heavy Hotel was unlikely to get many glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, it did win Lady Gaga a Golden Globe. The setting for series six has been kept under wraps deliberately, but, after a psychosexual murder house, an ominous asylum, a sultry New Orleans coven and a 1950s freak show, it’s unlikely to be dull. Trump Tower, perhaps? Graeme Virtue

Walk the Line

(James Mangold, 2005) 10.40pm, W

An impressive biopic of country great Johnny Cash, energised by riveting, Oscar-winning performances from Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as his true love and stage partner, June Carter. Walk the Line follows the well-worn path through Cash’s abused early years and guilt at the death of his brother, the wooing of Carter, the drug trouble and the famed Folsom prison recording. Phoenix is mesmerising, and does the songs almost like the Man in Black himself. Paul Howlett
