Friday Night Dinner and Coronation Street star Frances Cuka dies aged 83

Friday Night Dinner star Frances Cuka has died aged 83, it has been confirmed.

The actress, who played the programme’s loveable grandma Nelly Buller, died on February 16 according to an obituary published in The Guardian.

Her cause of death has not been confirmed.

She played the mother of Tamsin Greig's character, Jackie, on the Channel 4 show, also appearing alongside Simon Bird, Paul Ritter and Mark Heap and Tom Rosenthal.

The show’s creator Robert Popper led the tributes to Frances on Twitter.

He said: “Terribly sad that our wonderful Friday Night Dinner Grandma, Frances Cuka, has passed away.”

Elsewhere, Frances had a 50-year career as an actress and also had recurring roles in the soaps including Coronation Street and Crossroads.

According to the Mirror Online, Frances also sort-of played Peggy Mitchell in BBC soap EastEnders.

The character had been introduced in 1991 and several scenes had been filmed before she was axed and replaced by Jo Warne.

She also starred in Casualty between 2006 and 2009, with her character, Mrs Bassey, being killed off in an explosion.

She also appeared in a number of films, including 1970's Scrooge as Bob Cratchit's wife, and in 1972's Henry VIII in Catherine of Aragon.

Away from the screen, Frances was also a big star on the West End stage.

After training at the Guildhall School of Music, she made her stage debut at the Royal Court, Warrington as Effie in a 1955 production of Meet Mr Callaghan.

Series six of Friday Night Dinner is due to be released in March.
