April 24--Fashion lovers have two events vying for their attendance Friday night: The Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence and opening night of the "Dior and I" movie at the Music Box Theatre. Whatever you choose, you can hardly lose.
Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence
Why go: Fashion schools around Chicago have their own shows each year, but this is like a sizzle reel of the work being done at five of them. Students entering garments in the runway show are serious, being judged on the spot for a shot at cash, display space at Saks Fifth Avenue and mentorship. Want to persuade a reluctant companion to attend? Up the ante of interest by placing playful bets as to who will win. Bonus: The event is at philanthropist Richard H. Driehaus' private warehouse, which houses his antique cars, diversifying the portfolio of amusements. Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction add to them.
6:30 p.m. Friday at 700 S. Des Plaines St. General seating: $175; $300 for VIP tickets including after-party. See driehausdesign.org.
"Dior and I"
Why go: Because Dior. Plus, anyone who buys a ticket for screenings at the Music Box will be entered into a raffle to win a $500 gift card donated by premiere boutique Blake. (The lucky winner might choose to allocate the proceeds to a Dior purchase at Blake, or a portion thereof). Oh, and the film's intrigue: Dior's new artistic director Raf Simons has a vision for the haute couture collection. The atelier has eight weeks to execute it. Pins and needles!
2, 5 and 7:20, 9:40 p.m. Friday at the Music Box, 3733 N. Southport Ave. Tickets: $10. See musicboxtheatre.com/features/dior-and-I for other days' showings.
