Friday food news: Berrista, brunches, British bake off

Dec. 05--News and notes from the food world:

--Homaro Cantu's latest venture, Berrista, opens Monday in Old Irving Park. It's his long-gestating sandwich and coffee shop that will be a platform for his Miracle Berry, a plant-extracted tablet that tricks the mind into tasting sour as sweet, which allows foods to be made without sugar. Berrista will offer scones, turnovers, cakes made with and without sugar. Berrista is located at 4219 W. Irving Park Rd., and open Monday to Saturday.

--Chicago magazine begins a weekly brunch column. Up first: A10 in Hyde Park, home to a warm brioche sticky bun that's still giving the reviewer the shakes. [Chicago]

--Got an out-of-town friend or relative coming to Chicago? Know someone who asks, "Where should I eat while in town?" Direct them to our updated Chicago Dining 101 Guide.

--You can't drive past Western Ave. over Belmont without noticing Underbar. Sadly, next week will be its last for the 4 a.m. bar. [DNAInfo]

--A friend recently recommended a BBC show called "The Great British Bake Off." I watched the first few episodes, and it's an utterly charming and genial baking competition. Unlike Top Chef and the ilk, there's no backstabbing, no screaming, no dramatic music flourishes. It's a group of Brits, from students to retirees and construction workers, encouraging each other to do their best on their Swiss rolls. The 10-episode series was heretofore only available in the U.K., but now comes news PBS will air it beginning Dec. 28. [Huffington Post]
