Friars Walk set to lose another shop as Flying Tiger is closing down

Newport' s Friars Walk shopping centre is set to lose another high profile tenant with the confirmation that Flying Tiger Copenhagen is closing.

The shopping centre has confirmed the Danish variety retailer, commonly known as Tiger, is closing its doors for good, making it the fifth shop in the centre to close this year.

Bosses have said it's due to close at the end of the month, adding a scheduled closure was planned before the Covid-19 pandemic as the store had been "unprofitable".

The store is notable for its Scandinavian-style homeware goods, DIY products, hobby supplies and spices, and has been found in the centre since it opened.

The news comes almost exactly a year after Flying Tiger announced it was closing its store in nearby Cwmbran, which closed last September.

This year has already seen Topshop, Carphone Warehouse and Schuh leave Friars Walk, while last week it was confirmed that Krispy Kreme was not reopening in the centre after lockdown.

Simon Pullen, director of Friars Walk shopping centre, confirmed the store would be closing.

Michael Burke, Tiger's managing director, UK & Ireland, said: "We can confirm that the store in Newport is planned to close and this was a scheduled closure pre Covid-19 as the store has been unprofitable.

"Last day of trading is August 29.

"We continue to look for new opportunities and great locations in Wales, and hope to see our Newport customers in our other Welsh stores."
