Friars Walk dealt yet another blow as The Body Shop confirms it is closing down

Friars Walk in Newport is set to lose yet another store as The Body Shop has confirmed that it will close down next month.

The store has said it will close permanently on September 6, adding to a host of closures in the shopping centre so far this year.

The shop, which has been open since the centre first opened in 2015, sells hair and skincare cosmetics and perfumes, and also has a store on the high street.

While it is unclear whether that store is affected by its Friars Walk closure, a spokesperson for The Body Shop said: "I can confirm the [Friars Walk] store will be closing on September 6 and the closest store for customers will be Cwmbran."

Friars Walk has seen a number of tenants pull out of the centre so far this year.

Topshop, Carphone Warehouse, Schuh and Krispy Kreme have already left, while last week Flying Tiger confirmed it would also leave the centre this month.

Meanwhile, another outlet in the centre has also confirmed it has closed, as Mexican chain Chiquito has confirmed it will not reopen after lockdown.

The chain, which is owned by The Restaurant Group, confirmed in March that 60 of its stores would stay closed as it struggled to cope with the fallout from coronavirus, though it wasn't confirmed at that stage which stores were closing.

A spokesperson from Chiquito confirmed the restaurant had closed, saying: "The casual dining sector has faced enormous, well documented pressures which have been exacerbated by Covid-19 and the lockdown.

"Unfortunately, we have had to take difficult but necessary decisions to ensure a sustainable future for our business. We have been in close contact with affected colleagues throughout this process and we are doing all we can to support them during this time."
