Friars Walk confirms it has lost another store as Schuh closes for good

Friars Walk shopping centre in Newport is to lose another store, with the confirmation that Schuh has left the centre.

The centre has confirmed that the shoe shop will not reopen as it has decided not to return due to the difficulty currently posed to retail trade.

It is the first store in Friars Walk to close since lockdown restrictions forced retail to shut on March 23, and the second to shut this year after Topshop announced in January that it would leave the centre.

Friars Walk shopping centre director Simon Pullen confirmed the store had come to the end of its lease and decided not to renew "during this difficult economic and uncertain trading time".

The closure comes as a blow to the city centre at a time where high streets around the UK have faced major uncertainty in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

Shoppers flocked to shopping centres and main streets to queue as non-essential retail in Wales reopened this week, with Friars Walk, Kingsway Centre and Newport Market all reopening their doors.

The lockdown period has seen hundreds of jobs lost due to the permanent closure of major outlets like Monsoon and Accessorize, while Debenhams has closed its Welsh store in Merthyr Tydfil.

However, Debenhams' Friars Walk store has reopened after the council stepped in at the last minute to save it.
