Freshman James Robinson among two Florida players cited for marijuana possession

GAINESVILLE, Fla. _ Highly touted Florida freshman James Robinson reportedly is in trouble again for a marijuana incident, his second in less than a year.

Robinson and linebacker Ventrell Miller, both first-year freshmen from Lakeland, were cited for possession of the drug earlier this week.

Robinson, the Gators' top offensive recruit in the 2017 class, was cited for marijuana possession Jan. 29 during a recruiting visit to Ohio State. The incident jeopardized Robinson's scholarship offer to UF, but three days later the school ended up signing him.

Meanwhile, Miller currently is suspended with six teammates for their roles in a scheme that involved the misuse of school-issued funds.

On the latest incident involving the Robinson and Miller, a UF spokesman released a statement: "Coach Mac is aware and it has been dealt with."

UFPD spokesman Maj. Brad Barber said Thursday that Robinson and Miller were in a room at the Keys residential complex where an officer encountered smoke and found two small bags of marijuana.

A residential assistant smelled a "strong odor of burnt cannabis emanating in the air" around 12:30 a.m. Monday, according to the police report via First Coast News in Jacksonville. The RA notified police who came to the room and confronted the two players.

The repercussions of Robinson's second marijuana citation in fewer than seven months are unknown. McElwain will address the media next on Monday.

On National Signing Day Feb. 1, McElwain said Robinson deserved a second chance.

Rated the nation's No. 14 receiver and No. 114 overall prospect by 247Sports, Robinson's signing helped boost McElwain's 2017 class into the top 10.

"Obviously, as in all players, the important thing is you do your research and your background," McElwain said. "My guess is there's a few people in this crowd right here that have some regrets on things they've done, and yet at the same time take responsibility for it.

"Here is the good thing: We get an opportunity to be involved in his life. We get an opportunity to help him move forward, as we do all the players on this team. I'm excited about him being a Gator."
