Freshly planted trees ripped up by youths just one week after fire in children's playground

Freshly planted trees have been ripped up in a park which has been "plagued" with anti-social behaviour.

Scores of trees have been planted in Cwmrhydyceirw Park earlier this year, as part of a wider project across Swansea.

But dozens have been torn from the ground in the park, just a week after a fire was lit at the children's playground.

Some residents say it is just the latest example of anti social behaviour in the park.

Gemma Farrell said: "My son and his friends use the park and on a few times they have felt that they had to leave due to teens being antisocial and starting fires right next to the playground area.

"My son and his friends are only 11 and his friend was beaten up there only a couple of weeks ago.

"The behaviour of some of the older kids and teens down there is awful, even towards adults when their asked to stop the swearing and put the fired out.

"The last thing anyone wants is for any of them to be hurt.

"It feels like we are fighting a losing battle".

Another resident, who lives near the park, said: "Last year I was in my garden when a group of teenagers threw a big stone over my fence.

"It could have hit my children or my animals.

"Kids throw their rubbish on the floor sometimes even when parents are there, and there are constant gangs setting fires, smoking drugs and drinking, as well as people riding quad bikes and other motor bikes".

Last September, trees gifted by the Woodland Trust and planted by children were also snapped and torn down outside Swansea’s Guildhall.

A spokesman for Swansea Council said: "The council, along with community groups and environmental groups, are putting a huge amount of effort into improving our natural environment by carrying out tree planting initiatives all across the city.

"It’s disappointing to see a minority of mindless vandals spoiling the efforts put in by so many.

"We would urge anyone to contact police or the council if they have information relating to this incident".
