Fresh yellow weather warning for Ayrshire with rush hour snow forecast and ferry service cancelled

A fresh yellow weather warning has been issued for Ayrshire tomorrow with snow forecast to hit during rush hour.

The Met Office says wintry showers, strong winds and low temperatures look set to be the order of the day as Storm Ciara continues to batter the United Kingdom.

It's shaping up to be a challenging week weather-wise and there could be disruption to travel with snow falling on higher ground as commuters bid to get to work on Monday.

At sea, sailings between Ardrossan and Brodick on the Isle of Arran have already been impacted tomorrow, CalMac has said.

The MV Caledonian Isles, which has suffered an engine fault, is currently berthed at Brodick meaning the 7am crossing from Ardrossan has been cancelled.

The operator says a review will be carried out at 7.15am on further sailings and added: "Please be advised that if repairs are successful, sailings are still at high risk of disruption due to adverse weather."

Once again, there will be no sailings between Lochranza on Arran and Tarbert, Argyll & Bute on Monday.

There was good news for rail customers in North Ayrshire tonight as ScotRail confirmed services were back up and running between Kilwinning and Largs/Ardrossan.

But Network Rail Scotland has warned this evening: "Storm Ciara isn't done yet. We expect to see strong and even extreme winds overnight, but as she clears, we'll see more wind, snow and ice on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday."

On the roads, motorists continue to be advised to be prepared before making their journeys and visit Traffic Scotland for up-to-date information. The A78 between Skelmorlie and Largs was closed for several hours earlier today.

Issues anticipated from the latest yellow weather warning include:

  • Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers;
  • Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel;
  • Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected;
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely;
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces;
  • Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
