Fresh weather warning issued for the North East as icy conditions continue

Another weather warning has been issued for the North East.

The Met Office has put the yellow warning in place from 6pm on Sunday until 11am on Monday.

It covers all areas of the region including Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, County Durham and Sunderland.

The first snow of the year fell on Saturday and sleet and rain overnight has caused many roads in the area to become icy.

Further snowfall could occur on high ground on Sunday as temperatures continue to plummet.

The warning says: "Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has been melting on Sunday and where frequent showers occur through the night.

"Further hill snow is also possible above 200-300m, though less extensively than last night."

What to expect

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
