Fresh weather warning for snow and ice in the North East as temperatures plummet

A fresh warning for snow and ice has been issued for the North East as the cold weather continues.

The Met Office issued its fourth yellow warning of the week for the region, which will be in force in western parts of County Durham and Northumberland from 8pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday.

Forecasters have warned that there could be a greater chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces as well as disruption on the roads.

Temperatures are forecast to drop as low as -2°C in some parts of the region overnight on Tuesday.

Railways may also be affected with longer journey times.

The new warning comes after there was widespread disruption caused by heavy snowfall in the region.

More than 150 schools were forced to close in County Durham alone along with several in Newcastle, Gateshead and Northumberland.

Tuesday night's forecast

Although a few snow showers are still expected over the Pennines, the rest of the region will become largely clear but cold, with a widespread frost expected in the morning.

Minimum temperature -2°C.

Wednesday's forecast

A mixture of sunny spells and showers, wintry over hills, but perhaps not as cold and windy as Tuesday.

Remaining largely dry in the east.

Maximum temperature 5 °C.
