TRICHY: Fresh waste ferrying to the Ariyamangalam dump yard every day is likely to pose a challenge for the civic body to reclaim the land. As the micro compost centres (MCC), decentralised waste processing units, disposal and recycling centres were processing waste only in 34 locations, a portion of waste generated in the city is still reaching Ariyamangalam.
Out of the 65 wards in the city, only 34-35 wards were directly covered by the MCC. Other 30 wards were additionally covered. Since there is no waste generating system, at least 30MT of waste being generated at the Gandhi market and Banana auction centre is heading to the dump yard every day. Considering that the city generates around 400-450MT of waste a day, the 34 MCCs altogether can process only 250-300MT of waste. The remaining waste were either accommodated in the MCCs or were dumped at vacant places or heading to the dump yard. Trichy Corporation also acknowledged that waste is still going to the yard. Gandhi market alone is touted to require a major MCC to recycle the waste generated each day. “We are identifying new sites for establishing MCC to cover the left out civic body wards. Disposing of waste is one of our challenging tasks, more industries and cement factories must come forward to reuse our waste that can be used as refuse-derived fuel,” a corporation official said. tnn
