Fresh warning for dog owners and walkers after further landslip at Whitley Bay coast

A new warning has been issued to people asking them to stay away from a cliff edge after a further landslip.

Earlier this month, a slippage took place on a cliff side near Whitley Bay Mini Golf, off The Links, in Whitley Bay.

The stretch, which lies between the Brierdene Car Park and St Mary's Island, is popular with dog owners and walkers.

People were told to avoid the route and signs were put up saying that particular section was closed.

Now a further slippage has taken place and the council is asking people to keep away from the area.

A spokesperson for North Tyneside Council said: "There has been some more slippage of the cliff side near to Whitley Bay Mini Golf & FootGolf.

"Please stay away from the area as the ground is still saturated and further movement could occur. Signs are in place and our team are monitoriing the situation."

Previously, the authority has said this kind of slippage is not uncommon and is a natural occurrence that can happen at any time during prolonged wet weather.

"It is caused by excessive surface water penetrating the clay cliff side and causing it to slide on to the beach," a spokesperson added.

"We will continue to monitor the cliff for further signs of movement, in line with our shoreline management plan.

"We advise people walking in this area to observe the signage, stay well clear of the edge, and exercise particular caution if their dogs are off the lead."
