Fresh warning against swimming in open water - as 'large group of youths' spotted in Dovestone Reservoir

Swimmers have been spotted in Dovestone Reservoir again on Monday (July 19) — despite pleas not to enter the water.

The hot weather has seen residents across the city-region try to cool off in any way they could — including taking a dip in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

Now, police have warned would-be swimmers against entering open water.

“In this hot weather please don't be tempted to swim in reservoirs,” Greater Manchester Police’s Saddleworth and Lees division said.

“We've had numerous reports that there are large groups of youths swimming in Dovestone reservoir.

“If your child has been or is planning on going please educate them of the dangers.”

The Canal and Rivers Trust ‘strongly advises’ against going into water, as ‘there are too many risks that you can't see hidden below the surface’.

Those risks include depth, disease, and hidden dangers like vegetation.

That’s alongside the freezing temperatures of large bodies of water, like reservoirs, which ‘can cause the blood to rush away from muscles to protect the organs’, the Trust says, resulting in ‘limbs and muscles becoming fatigued quickly’.

This can lead to drowning, the charity warns.

This weekend has seen a spate of tragedies in open water.

On Sunday, a 19 year-old-man, Ngapee Merenga, died at Salford Quays following desperate attempts to rescue him.

The talented footballer was described as ‘a true legend’ by his former coach, Mike Edwards.

Another body was recovered on Sunday, in the Peak District, after a man was seen getting in to difficulty swimming at the Victory Quarry in the Dove Holes area of Derbyshire at 7pm.
