Fresh twist in Will Grigg saga as Oxford United want to land Sunderland striker

Oxford United boss Karl Robinson has revealed he wants to take Will Grigg to the Kassam Stadium before the transfer window slams shut.

Grigg has been heavily linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light with Shrewsbury Town and Salford City keen.

The OxfordMail reports that the U's boss wants Grigg to challenge with Matty Taylor and Sam Winnall for a starting place.

The duo worked together previously while at MK Dons, where Grigg scored 22 goals as they gained promotion to the Championship.

Robinson also confirmed an interest in Grigg during last January's window.

He said: "I want him to fight with Matty Taylor and Sam Winnall for a place up front."

Grigg, 29, has not played since mid-December after suffering from a knee injury and is close to a return.

The Northern-Irishman has not found the net in 12 appearances this season, but has scored more than 100 league goals in his career.
