Fresh twist in Nottingham Forest's chase for Championship striker - report

Charlton Athletic are willing to offer Lyle Taylor a new contract after the striker rejected a fresh deal earlier this week.

Nottingham Forest have been linked with a move for Taylor, as Sabri Lamouchi's promotion-chasers look to beef up their squad for the second half of the season.

New Addicks chairman Matt Southall, whose East Street Investments firm took over the club from Roland Duchatelet, has opened the door for new talks with Taylor.

The 29-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, failed to respond to a new offer from the club with the deadline set by Southall passing.

As a result the club withdrew the offer.

Taylor top-scored last season when Charlton won promotion back to the Championship and has scored an impressive seven goals in 13 this campaign.

"In an ideal situation we'd have come in in October, finalised Lee's (manager Lee Bowyer) contract and Lyle's contract," he told football.london.

"But obviously fast forward and we are where we are. My main priority is to get that done."

Southall added: "It can always change but that's ultimately down to the player. From the opening statement, it's totally down to Lyle Taylor.

"That's not changed. We made the offer quite a few weeks ago. I met with the player's representative, we had discussions and the ball was in the representative's court. I felt that for the long-term and the model I'm trying to implement, I thought it was a fair, very good offer. It was way above the model.

"The players we're trying to bring in now... there will be marquee signings, there will be players for whom we need to go over and above if we feel they will strengthen the team.

"It's a new dawn, so as I said initially, I'm trying to build sensibly and sustainability. I won't go over and above and commit to anything if the long-term stability of the club.

"Long story short, I felt it was in the interest of the club to withdraw the offer.

"The door is not shut. The player had a day or so. I was down the training ground, the player was at the training ground and could have spoken to me but, like I said, the door is not shut.

"Do I want to sell him? No. Does Lee want to sell him? Heck, no. He's our player and if he stays until the end of the season, brilliant. If he comes to me and says, 'right, let's get around the table and do this', then of course my door and Lee's door is open."
