Fresh snow and ice Met Office warning issued for the North East as bitterly cold weather is set to continue

A new weather warning has been put in place for the North East as cold weather is expected to continue.

The Met Office has issued another yellow warning for snow and ice for all parts of the region.

It will be in place from 3pm on Saturday until the end of Monday.

The warning says: "Cold air will spread across the UK during the weekend with wintry showers likely to push inland into parts of England from the North Sea.

"This is likely to bring areas of accumulating snow through the period with some icy stretches developing.

"At this stage no single area can be highlighted as more at risk but given the coldness of the air disruption is possible at times."

What to expect

  • There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • A small chance that untreated pavements and cycle paths become impassable
