Fresh Prince star Alfonso Ribeiro warns reboot is 'not even based on show'

Will Smith got '90s kids excited in August last year when he announced the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was set for a comeback.

The star of the show revealed that Westbrook Studios and Universal TV are producing a new version of the series inspired by a fan-made trailer that went viral in 2019.

At the time, Will, praised the mock trailer calling the idea "brilliant".

But, not wanting to rain on the parade, Alfonso Ribeiro has warned fans of the show that the new take is not going to be quite as they might imagine.

The actor who played Carlton Banks in the iconic sitcom told E! News that it's not quite a "reboot" but is in fact "a totally different show".

The 49-year-old said: "It's not even based on the show. It's based on the theme song.

"It's a completely different thing. It's drama. It's not comedy."

Alfonso played his popular quirky character on the show for six seasons as the NBC show ran from 1990 to 1996.

He revealed that he doesn't know any further details as he won't be returning to the cast but he "appreciates" what is being created.

He added: "I'm like, roll the dice. Go ahead and try it and see what happens."

The actor, who now hosts American TV show America's Funniest Home Videos, looked back on his time on the show with fond memories.

He admitted that episodes were often completed in one take and wrapped up within two hours.

"We're hanging out all the time," he said. "This just happened to be with a crew there."

He also spoke with pride of how the cast still have love for each other 30 years after the series took off.

The "new" show is set to be titled Bel-Air and reports suggest it will dive deeper into the conflicts, emotions and biases that weren't in the original sitcom.
