Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot ‘in the works’ thanks to fan made YouTube clip

A Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is reportedly in the works - after Will Smith was inspired by a fan made viral video.

Last year, Fresh Prince superfan Morgan Cooper directed and wrote a four-minute trailer which reimagined the hit comedy as a gritty drama.

The clip soon went viral, racking up millions of views, and after catching Smith’s eye, Cooper will now be co-creating a whole series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new show - which will go by the title of Bel-Air - has been in the works in secret for over a year.

The industry publication adds that it’s a “dramatic take” on the comedy series, which will “dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases of what it means to be a Black man in America today.”

The show will be a co-production between Smith's Westbrook Studios and Universal TV, who are currently trying to find a home for the show.

Streaming services including Netflix and HBO Max are believed to be among those who have put in bids.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran from 1990 to 1996 and chronicled the life of a teenager (played by Smith) who left West Philadelphia to live with his wealthy relatives in California.

During its run, it was nominated for one Emmy and two Golden Globes.
