Fresh plans for 320 apartments at 'long-term derelict site' near Nottingham Railway Station

Fresh plans have officially been tabled for a vast tower block of 320 apartments at a 'long-term derelict site' near Nottingham Railway Station.

The development is earmarked to transform a vacant plot off Arkwright Street, south of the train station, at a site bounded by Crocus Street.

A range of studio, one and two-bed apartments are in the pipeline split between what the plans describe as a "a 12-storey landmark tower and three to five-storey building".

A previous proposal for a 420-student bed scheme has planning permission on the land but developers confirmed earlier this year they were working to draw up a revised scheme for working professionals.

A planning application for the 320 apartments has since been submitted to Nottingham City Council planners for consideration.

It is a prospect backed by senior business figures who say it will help "rejuvenate the area".

Lorraine Baggs, head of inward investment at Invest in Nottingham, said: “It is great to see things moving ahead for this significant residential development near to Nottingham’s train station, which would complement other developments happening in the area.

"If given the go-ahead, this 320-bedroom apartment building would provide a significant boost to Nottingham’s available housing stock.

"The location in the heart of the city and close to the tram and railway station would make this a very attractive option for city workers.

"The development of this prominent site in the city will really help to rejuvenate the area.

“Not only will it create a significant number of jobs during construction but it would also support the local economy once complete as its residents make use of retail and food outlets in the vicinity.

"These plans demonstrate ever-increasing confidence and interest in the city by investors and developers and this development would form part of the unprecedented wave of regeneration happening across the southside area.”

Planning documents state: "These proposals will provide the regeneration of a long-term derelict site within the important Meadows Gateway area.

"The scheme will provide 320 purpose-built, managed apartments for the private rental sector.

"The proposed design features high-quality robust natural materials which will compliment the surrounding streetscape together with the new attractive landscaped areas of public open space.

"The built form helps restore the streetscape of Arkwright Street which has been a gap site since the area was originally cleared in the 1970s."

They add: "This development will greatly enhance the appearance and character of the local area as well as providing much-needed housing."

The project is led by the Cassidy Group.
