Fresh missile strikes on Ukraine cities leave one dead and dozens injured

At least one person died and 25 were left injured after Russia launched a fresh series of missile strikes on cities in Ukraine.

The Kremlin unleashed a barrage of strikes on Monday morning in various regions including Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk.

Ukrainian officials said their air defence shot down 15 of 18 missiles launched by Russia.

Kyiv’s city officials wrote on the Telegram messaging app that all missiles directed at the capital were destroyed in what they said was the second attack on the city in three days.

The eastern Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad was struck twice overnight, and an industrial enterprise, 19 apartment buildings and 25 private buildings, among others, were damaged or destroyed.

The attack wounded 34 people, including five children, according to Serhii Lysak the region's top official.

Missiles also hit three other areas in the region, damaging residential buildings and a school, he said.

Vladimir Rogov, an official in the Russian-backed administration of the Zaporizhzhia region, posted late on Sunday what he said were pictures and videos of fires in Pavlohrad and said that Russian forces struck at military targets there.

Mr Rogov added that missiles had targeted railway infrastructure and fuel depots.

It comes after another barrage of missiles fired by Vladimir Putin’s forces on cities in Ukraine killed at least 25 people on Friday.

Relatives and friends cried next to coffins on Sunday as they buried children and others killed in the attack.

Almost all of the victims of the attack on Friday died when two missiles slammed into an apartment building in Uman. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said six children were among the 23 dead.

It comes as Ukraine prepares for its spring counter-offensive, which could reportedly begin in weeks or even days, as the battle for Bakhmut reaches a crucial juncture.

Russia yesterday claimed that it had taken four blocks in the west of the key eastern city, according to state news agency RIA.

But Ukraine’s army insisted that it remained in control of a vital supply route into the city, announcing in its daily briefing yesterday that it had repelled 58 Russian attacks in the previous 24 hours along the frontline from Bakhmut to Maryinka further south in the Donetsk region.
